"The sun is a natural spotlight, but that doesn't mean you should let it ruin your coat."
Living in Scottsdale (or anywhere in the AZ desert) during the summer is an extreme sport. While humans are complaining about their 'electric bills,' we dogs have real problems—like the fact that the sidewalk is currently the temperature of a pizza oven.
If you want to live the luxury desert life like I do, you need a strategy. Here is how I maintain my 'Spoiled Princess' status when the mercury hits 115°F:
-
The Bootie Requirement: If you see me walking across a parking lot without my protective footwear, call the authorities. It’s not just fashion; it’s survival. If the ground is too hot for a human’s hand, it’s too hot for my designer paws.
-
Hydration, but Make it Fancy: Water is fine, but chilled water in a ceramic, insulated bowl? That’s a lifestyle. I also highly recommend a splash of goat milk—it’s great for the skin and makes me feel like I’m at a spa.
-
The Indoor Dog Park Pivot: When the sun is being particularly aggressive, we take the party indoors. I prefer the air-conditioned malls or the high-end indoor parks where the lighting is better for my selfies anyway.
-
Sunscreen is Non-Negotiable: My ears are my best feature (obviously), and they need protection. A little pet-safe sunscreen on the nose and ears keeps me from turning into a toasted marshmallow.
Umka’s Tip: If your parents aren't carrying a portable fan for you, are they even trying?

When the AC pit-stop calls, Umka retreats to her handcrafted sheepskin bed — the coolest (literally) spot in the house.
